Another key session at our second Cornwall Food Summit atΒ Nancarrow Farm on Monday 2 December focuses on the Cornish food economy.
Business entrepreneurs in three successful spheres of our good local food economy will be sharing their experience and encouraging a wider conversation. We’re asking these questions:
How do we celebrate local, sustainably produced food?
How do we support good farmers, growers and producers to thrive?
How do we help good food enterprises access land and markets?
Ruth Huxley has been instrumental in raising awareness of the value of agrifood to the economy of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly over the past 20 years.
In 2010 Ruth set up the sector network organisation Cornwall Food and Drink, focusing on raising the profile of Cornish food and developing new markets. Six years later she created the now employee-owned Great Cornish Food store, next to Waitrose in Truro.
Raising the Bar is her new development programme aimed at helping food, drink, farming and fishing businesses improve their resilience and meet potential.
Jamie Hext is a third-generation farmer based at Carwarthen Farm in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, and is dedicated to continuing his family’s farming legacy.
His aim is to provide top-quality produce that supports both local chefs and a more enlightened food system.
Jamie manages a large flock of commercial grass-fed ewes, producing high-quality lamb meat with a focus on sustainability and animal welfare. In 2021, he founded Roseland Market Garden, supplying local hospitality with fresh, seasonal vegetables grown with strong environmental and sustainability credentials.
Jack Wing of The Cornish Fishmonger at St Mawes is a passionate fish merchant with a deep commitment to sustainable seafood practices and marine conservation initiatives.
His focus is on the family business, Wing of St Mawes, founded by his parents over 40 years ago, where he strives to make a positive impact on the fishing industry.
Jack is committed to advocating sustainable fishing methods and educating consumers, suppliers and employees about the importance of championing sustainable seafood and supporting local fishworkers.
The #CornwallFoodSummit on Monday 2 December brings together organisations and individuals working in partnership to create a better food system for Cornwall.
